Prevent Back Pain When Shoveling!

Specht Physical Therapy in Swansea and Providence

Proper shoveling techniques illustrated in four steps: bend at the knees, scoop and lift with your legs, turn sideways without twisting your back, and chop deep snow down before shoveling it (opens in a new tab)

*REMINDER**
If you’re going out to shovel snow tomorrow, make sure to follow proper technique and avoid potential pain or injury!
• Keep feet hip width or wider. Place weight on the front foot, near the shovel. Use your legs to push the shovel forward.
• When lifting the shovel, shift weight to the rear foot and keep the load close to your body. Lift the load with the power of your legs and arms, not your lower back.
• Shift your entire body in the direction of the snow. Don’t twist your waist or throw with your back.
